Mission

The mission of Rethinking Economics UVM is to foster diversity of economic thought among the University of Vermont’s community, RE USA network, and beyond by enabling co-learning of diverse economic education to help us work towards well-being economies that are sustainable, just and efficient at sufficiently meeting people’s needs within planetary boundaries.

We believe that economics education needs to be grounded in its biophysical and social foundations. Economics needs to be democratized and based on how the real world works, critical pluralism, heterodox economics, and systems thinking. While economics education needs to be based on these core principles, it also needs to remain flexible and adaptable to study and address the coevolving and intertwined social and ecological crises that we face.

We also believe that students should have a say on the economics curriculum they are being taught to ensure that we are preparing them to understand and face the challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century with the most diverse and realistic economic knowledge available.
